Why buy pre-owned platinum, gold or gemstone jewellery rather than new?
Quality at a substantial discount, with the same trust signal you would want on new. Every piece passing the counter is examined, authenticated and cleaned at the bench before it goes into the case. Diamonds and coloured stones are graded by Stephen, who qualified as a Gemmologist (FGA) from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain in 1987. Pre-owned, done properly, is a quieter way to own a finer piece. Done improperly, it is a risk. The qualification is the difference.
Can you remount an inherited ring or pendant for me?
Yes. Bring the original piece in. The bench team will assess the stones, talk through what they will tolerate (older cuts and Victorian settings need careful handling), and we will design a new piece around them. Original gold can be melted and re-used in the new mount where you want the metal to stay in the family. Three to six weeks from sign-off to finished piece on most remounts.
What happens when I bring scrap gold or silver in for valuation?
A quiet, no-pressure conversation. We weigh, we test, we quote. Free valuation; if you accept the offer we pay on the spot. We do require photographic ID and proof of address for any buy-in, the same as any registered jeweller. If the piece is worth more as a remount than as scrap, we will tell you, and you walk out with both options.
Why are you only open Thursday to Saturday now?
Three deep days at the counter, four days for bench work, family and the books. After twenty-five years that is the working rhythm that fits Crown Jewellers. Thursday and Friday 10:00 to 17:00, Saturday 10:00 to 15:30. Outside those hours you can email info@crownjewellersharrogate.co.uk or leave a voicemail on 01423 502000 and we will reply when the counter opens.
Do you ship pieces, or do I need to come in to Harrogate?
Both. For straightforward purchases (a silver pendant, a Tiffany piece, a quoted scrap-gold remittance) we can post insured anywhere in the UK. For engagement rings, remounts and anything bespoke we ask you to come in to 23 Commercial Street at least once, ideally early in the process, so the design conversation happens with the piece in the room. Customers have travelled from across the country for the gemstone work.
Will I be pushed into a purchase?
No. The line we have held for twenty-five years is "jewellery is not about a quick sale, it is about a relationship, ensuring that in the cold light of day you will not feel pushed into a purchase." If the cheaper option is the right one for you we will tell you, and if the right answer is to wait we will tell you that too.
