WHAT WE SELL · FOUR LINES, ONE COUNTER

Pre-owned fine, contemporary silver, bespoke, repairs. All under one roof.

Twenty-five years of buying carefully and selling honestly. The pre-owned line is the one we are known for: every piece authenticated at the bench, every diamond graded under the same standards as a new-stone purchase.

PRE-OWNED FINE

Pre-owned platinum, gold and gemstone jewellery

Crown’s defining line. Every piece examined, authenticated and cleaned at the bench before it goes into the case. Diamonds and coloured stones graded by Stephen, the same person who will quote you. Pre-owned at a third to half of new, with the gemmology credential to back the grade.

Each stone graded under FGA / DGA standards
CONTEMPORARY SILVER

Contemporary silver, with pre-loved Tiffany & Co.

Modern silver from simple stud earrings to statement pieces. A standing selection of genuine pre-owned Tiffany & Co. silver, usually a third to a half less than new. On pendants you choose from up to six chain styles and two lengths against the same piece.

Six chain styles, two lengths, one counter
BESPOKE & REMODELLING

Bespoke and remodelling, with GIA-certified diamonds

New pieces and remounts of inherited stones. Engagement rings, wedding bands, anniversary remounts, brooches re-cased as pendants. GIA-certified diamonds on bespoke. Original gold can carry forward into the new mount where you want the metal to stay in the family.

GIA-certified on every bespoke diamond
REPAIRS & RHODIUM

Repairs, restoration, rhodium re-plating

Ring sizing, retipping claws, remounting stones, chain repairs, stone replacement. Rhodium re-plating restores dulled white gold to as-new condition. All by skilled craftsmen, with the same standards the bespoke pipeline uses.

A HUSBAND-AND-WIFE INDEPENDENT · 2000 TO 2026

July 2000. Stephen and Sue Kramer open Crown Jewellers at 23 Commercial Street.

A Gemmologist qualified thirteen years earlier, his wife running the books and the floor, one shop on a corner of Commercial Street. The line they hold from day one is the line they have held since: jewellery is a relationship, not a quick sale, and the customer should never feel pushed.

Twenty-five years on, the same husband-and-wife team run the same shop on the same corner. Pre-owned platinum, gold and gemstone pieces pass over the bench under Stephen's FGA and DGA standards before they go into the cases. Bespoke commissions and remounts of inherited stones are designed at the counter and made on the bench. The pattern of the week has shifted to Thursday, Friday, Saturday at the counter and the rest of the week behind it, but the work and the standards are what they were in 2000.

“Jewellery is not about a quick sale, it is about a relationship, ensuring that in the cold light of day you will not feel pushed into a purchase.” Sue and Stephen Kramer, Harrogate Advertiser 21st-anniversary piece

GEMMOLOGIST-LED, SINCE 1987

The person who quotes you on a diamond is the person who graded it.

A pre-owned fine jewellers is only as trustworthy as the person grading the stones. Most independents selling pre-owned rely on the dealer's word. Crown does not. Stephen Kramer qualified from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain as a Gemmologist (FGA) in 1987, and as a Diamond Grader (DGA). Every diamond and coloured stone passing the counter is graded by the same person who will sit with you across the case.

That qualification is what lets us run the pre-owned line at the scale we do. We can buy in confidence at auction, at trade, and from customers walking in with inherited pieces. We can quote in confidence at the counter. And we can stand behind a piece in five or ten years when the customer brings it back for a clean, a re-plate, or to remount the stone in a new setting for a daughter.

FAQ · SIX QUESTIONS WE GET MOST

Quick answers, then bring the piece in for the rest.

Why buy pre-owned platinum, gold or gemstone jewellery rather than new?

Quality at a substantial discount, with the same trust signal you would want on new. Every piece passing the counter is examined, authenticated and cleaned at the bench before it goes into the case. Diamonds and coloured stones are graded by Stephen, who qualified as a Gemmologist (FGA) from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain in 1987. Pre-owned, done properly, is a quieter way to own a finer piece. Done improperly, it is a risk. The qualification is the difference.

Can you remount an inherited ring or pendant for me?

Yes. Bring the original piece in. The bench team will assess the stones, talk through what they will tolerate (older cuts and Victorian settings need careful handling), and we will design a new piece around them. Original gold can be melted and re-used in the new mount where you want the metal to stay in the family. Three to six weeks from sign-off to finished piece on most remounts.

What happens when I bring scrap gold or silver in for valuation?

A quiet, no-pressure conversation. We weigh, we test, we quote. Free valuation; if you accept the offer we pay on the spot. We do require photographic ID and proof of address for any buy-in, the same as any registered jeweller. If the piece is worth more as a remount than as scrap, we will tell you, and you walk out with both options.

Why are you only open Thursday to Saturday now?

Three deep days at the counter, four days for bench work, family and the books. After twenty-five years that is the working rhythm that fits Crown Jewellers. Thursday and Friday 10:00 to 17:00, Saturday 10:00 to 15:30. Outside those hours you can email info@crownjewellersharrogate.co.uk or leave a voicemail on 01423 502000 and we will reply when the counter opens.

Do you ship pieces, or do I need to come in to Harrogate?

Both. For straightforward purchases (a silver pendant, a Tiffany piece, a quoted scrap-gold remittance) we can post insured anywhere in the UK. For engagement rings, remounts and anything bespoke we ask you to come in to 23 Commercial Street at least once, ideally early in the process, so the design conversation happens with the piece in the room. Customers have travelled from across the country for the gemstone work.

Will I be pushed into a purchase?

No. The line we have held for twenty-five years is "jewellery is not about a quick sale, it is about a relationship, ensuring that in the cold light of day you will not feel pushed into a purchase." If the cheaper option is the right one for you we will tell you, and if the right answer is to wait we will tell you that too.
